Preparing for a pandemic
We helped our client develop responses to potential long-term disruptions and to increase the overall resiliency of its business.
The Situation
A leading global financial services firm, which placed a high priority on business continuity, had concerns about its readiness to respond to a pandemic. The client had a global, structured approach to managing risk, including a team of Business Continuity Planning (BCP) professionals who had developed effective response plans for localized events requiring site and infrastructure recovery. The magnitude of a potential pandemic, however, required preparation for several new challenges. The client asked Satori to lead the effort to develop a comprehensive, global pandemic plan that met pre-determined readiness outcomes, to test the plans via table-top exercises, to integrate the plan into the overall BCP program, and to implement a plan maintenance process.
The Satori Solution
We led a Project Management Office (PMO) that outlined policies and identified the infrastructure required to sustain operations during an extended disruption. The PMO also developed strategies for engaging business lines in planning and for proactive outreach to external agencies to assess their ability to support the client during a potential pandemic. After building this information into a pandemic readiness plan, we designed and conducted a series of drill that used a plausible pandemic scenario as the basis for discussion.
To establish a source of credible information for the client’s workforce, we led the development of a cross-functional website with a portal for updates, policy-specific FAQs, on-going changes to corporate operations, and contact information for local resources. Finally, we worked with the BCP team to integrate a maintenance plan for all pandemic plans into the existing BCP process.
The Results
Our approach created a long-term, flexible solution that would help the client respond effectively in the event of a pandemic. Moreover, the pandemic planning framework, policy and approach have driven ongoing improvements in BCP.
